Astrya is the ancestral homeland of Humanity, a vast High Kingdom whose banners once flew beneath a single sovereign Crown. From its mountains, river valleys, fertile plains and storm-beaten coasts rose countless cultures, explorers, scholars, soldiers and kings. Though its people differ greatly from one region to another, they share a homeland whose legacy continues even far beyond its shores.

The Kingdom of Astrya

“The Crown endures, even unseen.”

Astrya is the ancestral homeland of Humanity, a vast High Kingdom whose banners once flew united beneath a single sovereign Crown. It is a land of contrasts. Great mountain ranges rise above deep valleys and ancient roads, while rivers wind through fertile plains toward storm-beaten coasts. Across these lands grew settlements, towns and cities whose people developed traditions and identities of their own. Yet for all their differences, the peoples of Astrya shared a common realm.

For generations, the High Kingdom stood as the political heart of Human civilisation. Its history was shaped by monarchs and nobles, soldiers and craftspeople, scholars and explorers. Kingdoms and communities rose beneath the greater banner of Astrya, each contributing to a civilisation far more varied than outsiders sometimes imagined. To call oneself Astryan therefore did not mean belonging to a single culture or way of life. A Human raised among the colder communities of Frostholm could differ greatly from one raised in Caldris, just as the customs of a rural settlement might bear little resemblance to those of a great city.

What united them was not sameness, but a shared homeland, history and Crown.

The Lands and Peoples of Astrya

Astrya was never a land of one people, one climate or one way of life. Across the High Kingdom, generations of Humans adapted to the lands they called home. Mountain communities, fertile heartlands, coastal settlements and distant regions developed customs, traditions and identities of their own. These differences could be heard in speech, seen in clothing and architecture. Even attitudes towards family, work, faith and authority could differ from one part of Astrya to another.

Yet these peoples remained Human and, despite their differences, part of the greater realm of Astrya.

A person's homeland could therefore be an important part of their identity. Two Humans might both call themselves Astryan while having very different experiences of what being Astryan meant.

Regions of Astrya

squareNORTHERN KINGDOMFrostholmA harsh realm of mountains and frost-touched highlands, where resilience, honour and loyalty are deeply valued. Frostholm is renowned for its martial traditions, smiths and communities accustomed to enduring hardship.
squareCROWNLANDSWindellThe heart of Astrya and seat of the High Throne. Life in the Crownlands is shaped by law, scholarship, guilds and royal institutions, giving its people a reputation for order, education and proper custom.
SquareSOUTHERN KINGDOMCaldrisA southern realm of warm coasts, golden lowlands and busy ports. Trade, travel and maritime life have shaped a culture known for ambition, diplomacy, adaptability and recognising opportunity.

These regions describe broad cultural tendencies rather than strict rules. Astrya contains countless towns, villages, noble holdings and local traditions within its three great domains. A person's birthplace may influence their upbringing without determining their personality, appearance, profession or beliefs.

The High Crown of Astrya

At the pinnacle of Astryan authority stands the High Crown, traditionally held by House Windmere from the royal seat at Windell. The High King is regarded as sovereign of Astrya, overlord of the Regional Kings and the source from which noble legitimacy ultimately flows. Titles, lands and lesser crowns are recognised through the authority of the High Crown, binding the three great domains beneath a single political tradition.  Though the Northern and Southern Kingdoms retain their own rulers and customs, their crowns exist beneath Astryan supremacy. The Crownlands surrounding Windell stand apart from both, held directly by the High Crown and serving as the administrative and judicial heart of the realm.

During the early stages of the Fading, however, House Windmere disappeared from public sight. No recognised successor has taken the High Throne. No rival High King has been formally accepted. In law and tradition, the Crown therefore remains rightful even though its rulers have not been seen.

This absence has created uncertainty throughout Astrya.  Some continue to wait faithfully for House Windmere's return. Others question how long a realm can remain bound to an unseen sovereign. More ambitious voices have begun to wonder whether new crowns might rise if the old order cannot endure.

For now, however, Astrya remains a High Kingdom without a visible High King.

Human Society & Daily Life

Humans are among the most varied peoples of Uros. Even within Astrya, there is no single way in which a Human is expected to live. Life can differ enormously between the crowded streets of Windell, the mountain communities of the North, the ports of Caldris and the countless villages, farms and noble holdings scattered throughout the High Kingdom. Human communities take many forms. Monarchies and noble houses govern great territories, while guilds, councils, local leaders and other organisations can hold considerable influence over everyday life.

Despite this diversity, Humans have earned a reputation for adaptability.

Their comparatively short lives encourage many to build, learn, explore and establish something that will survive beyond them. Farmers cultivate new land, merchants seek new markets, craftspeople refine their trades, scholars preserve knowledge and explorers push beyond familiar borders.

Cooperation is equally important. Trade, alliances and the exchange of skills have allowed Human communities with very different traditions to remain part of the same wider civilisation.

There is therefore no single profession, temperament or social position that defines a Human. A person may be a farmer, soldier, scholar, sailor, merchant, craftsperson, noble, labourer or something else entirely.

Human lives are comparatively short beside some of the other peoples of Uros. Most live approximately 70–90 years, although individual lives naturally vary.

What Your Character Would Know

  • Every Human character will have their own experiences, education and upbringing, but there are certain things that an ordinary Astryan would reasonably understand about their people and recent history.
  • They would know that Astrya is the ancestral homeland of Humanity, traditionally united beneath the High Crown of House Windmere. They would recognise the three great domains of the realm — the Northern Kingdom, the Crownlands and the Southern Kingdom — even if they had never travelled far beyond their own home.
  • They would know that House Windmere disappeared during the early stages of the Fading, and that no recognised High King has replaced them.
  • They would have experienced, witnessed or at least heard extensively about the Fading and its effects upon Astrya. Withered crops, failing land, soured water and the growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the Old Lands are not secret knowledge.
  • Those travelling to Alphos would know that expeditions crossed the Great Sea seeking lands beyond the Fading and that House Headsted played a major role in establishing a Human foothold there.
  • However, an ordinary Human does not automatically possess complete knowledge of ancient history, hidden religious truths, unexplained phenomena or the intentions of powers beyond mortal understanding.
