The quiet folk of Merrinvale

The Merrinfolk of Merrinvale

The Merrinfolk are a small, sturdy people whose distant ancestry can be traced back to the Humans of Astrya. Many centuries ago, a group of Humans chose to leave the pressures and ambitions of ordinary Astryan life behind. They sought peace, solitude and a gentler existence, eventually settling fertile lands beyond Astrya's borders.

Those lands became known as Merrinvale.

squareThe HillsMerrinvaleThe true home of any Merrinfolk, for as long as they remember this is what provided them the life they chose to lead,  Green hills, blue lakes and the calmness so sweet would send anyone to sleep.

Over generations of relative isolation and close-knit settlement, the descendants of these early settlers gradually became physically distinct from their Human ancestors. Exactly when they first came to be recognised as a separate people has been lost to history, but in time they became known simply as the Merrinfolk.

It was a broad patchwork of farms, villages and small market towns spread across rolling countryside. Communities largely governed themselves through families, respected elders and local custom, while larger concerns were settled through gatherings between neighbouring settlements.

There was no throne or central ruler. For most Merrin, there was little need for one.

Merrinvale's independence was not built upon military strength or territorial ambition. Its people simply had little desire to expand beyond their lands and maintained peaceful relations with their neighbours. To many Merrin, the purpose of a homeland was not to become powerful. It was to provide good soil, safe homes, full tables and enough time to enjoy them.

Life in Merrinvale

Life in Merrinvale was shaped far more by the land and seasons than by politics or ambition. Most Merrin lived in small villages surrounded by fields,. Even the larger market towns remained modest by Astryan standards, serving mainly as places to trade produce, tools, livestock, news and whatever else local communities could not easily provide for themselves. Families generally worked their own land, but Merrin life was rarely truly solitary.

Planting, harvest, repairs and difficult seasons often brought neighbours together, with labour, tools and food shared between households as needed. Helping one another was not usually treated as charity, but as part of the ordinary responsibility of belonging to a community.

A household that had plenty one season might be the household asking for help the next.

Food holds particular importance in Merrin culture. Shared meals are opportunities to talk, celebrate, settle disagreements and spend time with neighbours. Visitors are commonly offered a place at the table, and gatherings often include music and whatever food or drink each household can contribute.

Comfort is not considered laziness among the Merrin.

They believe hard work has a purpose: to create a life in which there is time to enjoy what that work provides. A well-tended garden, a full pantry, a warm hearth and an evening spent among family and friends are all regarded as worthwhile achievements. Merrin communities traditionally had little formal government. Most disagreements were settled between the people involved, sometimes with the help of neighbours or respected elders.

Elders were valued primarily for experience and judgement, rather than because age automatically granted authority.

When a decision affected several households or settlements, representatives could gather to discuss the matter together. These gatherings were practical rather than ceremonial, and Merrin generally preferred reaching a solution everyone could live with over creating complicated systems of law or office.

Despite their independence, Merrinvale remained closely connected to neighbouring Astrya. Merrin regularly travelled to Astryan markets for specialised goods,, while Human merchants were familiar visitors within Merrinvale. The two peoples generally regarded one another as distant kin and good neighbours. Their differences were more likely to inspire teasing than hostility. An Astryan might consider a Merrin unambitious or overly comfortable. A Merrin might quietly wonder why Astryans insist on making everything quite so complicated.

Appearance & Character

Merrinfolk are considerably smaller than their Human ancestors, typically standing between 3'2" and 4'2" tall.

They are naturally sturdy for their size, with broad hands and feet, rounded features and expressive eyes. Generations spent working farmland have left many Merrin well suited to physical labour despite their small stature. Going barefoot is common during warmer seasons, particularly around farms and villages, and many Merrin develop thick, calloused soles from years spent walking fields, gardens and country paths. Their smaller size should not be mistaken for frailty. Merrin are generally resilient and nimble, and a lifetime of farming, carrying, digging, climbing and working with animals can produce surprisingly strong individuals.

Typical lifespan: approximately 70–90 years.

While Merrin culture values peace, comfort and community, not every Merrin has the same personality. Some are cheerful and sociable. Others are quiet, stubborn, adventurous, argumentative or private. A Merrin might be a farmer, cook, hunter, brewer, carpenter, merchant, traveller or any number of other things. What tends to unite them is not a particular personality, but the culture in which they were raised.

Most Merrin grow up understanding the importance of family, community responsibility, hospitality and enjoying the simple comforts of life.

Ambition itself is not necessarily frowned upon. It is the pursuit of status or power at the expense of actually living that many Merrin struggle to understand.

Merrin also tend to approach danger differently from more martial peoples. War holds little prestige in traditional Merrin culture. Merrinvale maintained no standing army, and its people generally tried to distance themselves from the conflicts of larger realms. That does not make them pacifists.

Threaten a Merrin's family, neighbours or home and they are quite capable of defending them. Historically, community musters might see hunters arrive with bows while farmers brought axes, billhooks, pitchforks and whatever else was available.

On occasion, that might include a particularly sturdy tankard.
