Elfin of Elyiore

The Elfin are an ancient and long-lived race originating from the forest realm of Elyiore. For countless generations their civilisation grew around the Mother Tree, a divine gift entrusted to their protection and the living heart of their culture. When the Fading began to consume their homeland, the Elfin carried a living piece of that legacy across the Great Sea, seeking a place where Elyiore might take root once more.

The Realm of Elyiore

Elyiore is the ancestral homeland of the Elfin

For generations beyond easy counting, the Elfin shaped their civilisation alongside the natural world rather than attempting to master it. Settlements grew amongst ancient trees, halls were woven through living branches, and paths followed the forests and waterways that had existed long before them.

At the heart of the realm stood The Heartwood, the spiritual and political centre of Elfin civilisation and home of the great Mother Tree. Elyiore was not ruled by a king or queen. The realm was guided by the Elyiore High Council, a gathering of respected Houses and appointed stewards entrusted with protecting the Mother Tree and maintaining balance throughout the realm.

Leading the Council was the First Speaker, chosen from amongst its members to speak with the authority of the Council itself. Across Elyiore, stewards were appointed to oversee settlements, groves and districts according to their wisdom, service and loyalty rather than lineage alone. This philosophy shaped much of Elfin civilisation. Authority was considered a responsibility entrusted to those capable of carrying it, rather than a possession belonging to those who held it.

Until the Fading reached Elyiore.

The Heartwood & Mother Tree

At the centre of Elyiore stands the Heartwood, the ancient capital of the Elfin and the spiritual heart of their civilisation.

Unlike the stone-built cities of many other peoples, the Heartwood grew alongside the forest itself. Bridges of woven vine stretched between immense branches, while halls and dwellings were shaped amongst living wood beneath the great emerald canopy. No walls surrounded the city; for generations, the Elfin considered the forest itself its shield.

At the very heart of this living city stands the Mother Tree, the oldest living being known to the Elfin and the sacred responsibility around which much of their civilisation developed.

Elfin tradition teaches that the Mother Tree was a gift from the Mother. From a seed taken from Herself, the Mother created the tree and placed within it knowledge of the natural world before entrusting it to the Elfin as its stewards and guardians.

Its distinctive leaves came to represent the passage of existence itself:

  • Purple leaves — the past
  • Green leaves — the present
  • Golden leaves — the future

Over countless generations, the Mother Tree became more than a sacred symbol. Its presence shaped Elfin tradition, stewardship and their understanding of their responsibility towards the natural world.

The Druids became its devoted caretakers, while the High Council gathered beneath its branches to guide Elyiore.

When the Fading finally threatened Elyiore itself, several saplings were prepared so that something living of the Mother Tree might survive beyond the Old Lands.

One travelled across the Great Sea with the Elfin who reached Alphos.

There it was planted within the forests surrounding their new settlement of Ishlian, taking root and becoming known as the Sister Tree.

For the Elfin of Alphos, its continued growth is living proof that although they were forced to leave Elyiore behind, a piece of their ancient homeland still grows beside them.

The Elfin Traditions

Although united as one people, centuries of life within Elyiore gave rise to distinct traditions among the Elfin.

Within the Heartwood, these traditions became closely associated with three great districts: the Canopy, the Spire and the Twilight District. Over generations, differences in environment, calling and experience influenced everything from appearance and clothing to values and preferred roles within Elfin society.

These traditions are commonly recognised today as the Wood Elfin, High Elfin and Fadewrought.

They remain Elfin first and foremost. These distinctions do not divide them into separate peoples, nor do they determine an individual's profession, personality or beliefs.

The Traditions
SquareCanopy TraditionWood ElfinTraditionally associated with Elyiore's Canopy District, Wood Elfin are closely connected to the wild forests and are renowned as wardens, scouts and protectors. Their traditions emphasise vigilance, patience and harmony with the living world.
squareSpire TraditionHigh ElfinAssociated with the Heartwood's Spire District, High Elfin traditions developed around scholarship, governance and the preservation of ancient knowledge. Wisdom, diplomacy and learning hold particular importance within their culture.
squareTwilight TraditionFadewroughtFadewrought are Elfin whose ancestors or lives were marked by prolonged proximity to the Fading. Often associated with the Twilight District, their altered appearance is regarded not as a curse or corruption, but as a visible legacy of endurance.

Wood Elfin commonly possess warm bronze through deep woodland-brown skin tones, with hair ranging through natural woodland and autumnal shades. Green, amber and hazel eyes are common, while clothing traditionally favours practical natural materials suited to life amongst the forests.

High Elfin commonly possess fair through pale-golden skin tones, with silver, platinum, pale-gold, dark or black hair. Blue, violet and silver-grey eyes are common. Their traditional clothing tends towards flowing garments, embroidery and elegant armour reflecting the Spire's scholarly and civic traditions.

Fadewrought show considerably more variation from one another, as the Fading did not leave every Elfin with identical changes. Cool, pale and ashen tones are common alongside darker or otherwise altered complexions, while silver, charcoal, muted-white, deep-blue and other subdued colours can appear in their hair and eyes. Their differences are the legacy of prolonged exposure rather than evidence of corruption.

Elfin Society & Daily Life

Elfin are a long-lived race whose relationship with time differs greatly from that of many other races.

Most Elfin live for approximately 300–500 years. With centuries potentially ahead of them, learning a craft, studying a subject or considering an important decision may occupy decades rather than years. Patience, preservation and long-term thinking therefore became deeply rooted within Elyiore's culture.

This does not mean Elfin are naturally passive. When their people, homes or the balance of the lands around them are threatened, they can act swiftly and decisively. Elfin society traditionally places great importance upon harmony, legacy and craftsmanship. Art, music, sculpture and ceremonial crafts are valued alongside practical professions, while knowledge and ancestral memory are carefully preserved between generations. Communities are commonly built alongside the natural environment rather than replacing it. This philosophy can be seen in everything from Elfin architecture to cultivation, where the goal is often to work with the existing landscape rather than reshape it unnecessarily.

Traditional Elfin society also associates certain stages of life with particular milestones. A first-age ceremony commonly occurs around 40, while mastery of a chosen art or craft is often expected only after a century or more of practice. Positions of significant stewardship traditionally favour those with centuries of experience. These are cultural expectations rather than absolute rules. An individual's experiences and circumstances can lead them towards responsibility, mastery or influence considerably earlier or later.

Physically, Elfin are commonly tall and slender, with pronounced pointed ears and graceful or deliberate movement. Their appearance varies considerably between individuals and traditions, and centuries of different family lineages mean there is no single appearance shared by all Elfin.

What Your Character Would Know

Every Elfin has their own upbringing, experiences and level of education, but there are parts of their people's history and present circumstances that most would reasonably understand.

  • They would know Elyiore as the ancestral homeland of the Elfin and the Heartwood as the ancient centre of their civilisation. They would understand the importance of the Mother Tree, the High Council and the traditions of stewardship that shaped Elfin society for generations.
  • They would recognise the Wood Elfin, High Elfin and Fadewrought as traditions within their own people. Their differences are familiar parts of Elfin society rather than divisions into entirely separate races.
  • They would know of the Fading and the devastation it brought to Elyiore. For the long-lived Elfin, this was not simply a sudden disaster. Some experienced its effects for many years and watched places they had known for generations slowly deteriorate.
  • They would know that several saplings of the Mother Tree were prepared as part of the exodus, intended to preserve living threads of Elyiore beyond the Old Lands.
  • Those who reached Alphos would also know that the sapling carried by their expedition survived the crossing.
  • It was planted within the forests of Alphos and became the Sister Tree, around which the settlement of Ishlian has grown.
  • In the months since their arrival, Ishlian has developed from a place of survival into a young but permanent settlement. Homes, workshops, paths, gardens and communal spaces now surround the Sister Tree, while hunting, cultivation, gathering, craftsmanship and trade sustain its growing population.
  • The Elfin would also be familiar with the nearby Elthari Grove and understand the Elthari as ancient kin who maintain their own culture, customs and independence from Ishlian.

What happens next, however, is far less certain.

There are also mysteries the Elfin themselves cannot answer.

  • They do not know what ultimately awaits Elyiore, whether the Fading can ever be reversed, or what the future will demand of their people upon Alphos.

Even Ishlian's political future remains unwritten. Surviving members of the Elyiore High Council retain respect and influence, but whether the old structures of Elyiore are preserved, reformed or replaced in their new homeland remains to be decided.

Those answers belong to the story still ahead.
