Backstory
Elswyth Ashenwood came from an impoverished background, having seen her parents constantly battling with debts from which they would never be able to free themselves. Unwilling to see her family suffer more, she found herself slowly being drawn into the criminal world of smuggling and trading, telling herself that it was only something temporary that would allow her family to survive. That wasn't the case, though. The fallout of a failed business deal resulted in her, and consequently her family, making enemies of some very dangerous individuals. And if that wasn't enough, her village was attacked shortly after. This led her to bear physical marks and sleepless nights. In order to protect what little family she still had, Elswyth Ashenwood took all the blame on herself and was offered an ultimatum: either leave or be murdered.
But now Elswyth is able to survive as a trader and an outlaw, amiable and quick-minded but wary underneath. She is very protective of those who are close to her – a leftover tendency from having to defend her own family in the raid – but slow to trust and wary when questioned about her past. And there is always the effect of the raid, which has left a deep impression on her; sounds of surprise, cornering or surprising her will cause flashbacks of terror or outbursts of uncontrolled rage that even she finds difficult to account for.
